
Getting Your Bathroom Mirror Defogging Just Right
Ever stepped out of a hot shower and stared at a mirror that looks like a frosted window? It’s annoying. To fix it, we use shortwave infrared lamps to warm up the glass. The goal is simple: make the mirror warmer than the steam in the room so the water can’t stick. But here is the tricky part. You have to get the power right. Too little, and you’re still wiping the glass with a towel. Too much, and you’re just wasting electricity—or worse, you could actually crack the glass. Size matters. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room, you don’t need a powerhouse. A small lamp, maybe 50W to 100W, does the trick. The space is small, the air warms up fast, and the mirror clears in a snap. Now, big master baths are a different story. When you’ve got a massive mirror in a large room, you need more muscle—usually between 200W and 500W. If you go too light here, you’ll get “ring fogging.” That’s when the middle of the mirror is crystal clear, but the edges stay cloudy. Not exactly the look we’re going for. Don’t overdo it. It’s tempting to think “more power equals better,” but that’s a mistake. If you crank up the wattage without a way to spread that heat, you create hot spots. Imagine a tiny point of intense heat on a cold piece of glass. That stress can make the mirror silvering peel off or, in the worst cases, cause the glass to snap. It’s all about a steady, even warmth. Work smarter, not harder. You shouldn’t be running a 300W lamp all day. That’s just throwing money away. The best way to do this is to hook the lamp up to a timer or a humidity sensor. Set it to kick in only when the room hits about 70% humidity. It saves your electricity bill and keeps the bulb from burning out too soon. One last tip: make sure the lamp is as wide as the mirror. It creates a “heat curtain” that keeps the whole viewing area clear, from edge to edge.
