
Keeping Your Glovebox Safe: The Truth About IR Elements
When you’re working in a glovebox with hazardous materials or sensitive chemicals, the last thing you want to think about is an electrical arc. One tiny spark and you’ve got a disaster on your hands. That’s why we don’t take shortcuts with our infrared heating elements. They’re designed for those tight, inert spaces where there’s zero room for error. To make sure everything is airtight, every single tube that leaves our shop goes through a total gauntlet of voltage and insulation tests. No exceptions.
Why we test every single lamp
A lot of companies just sample a few pieces from a batch and call it a day. We think that’s a gamble. Instead, we push every single lamp to its absolute limit. We’re looking for the tiny stuff—microscopic cracks in the quartz or a bit of contamination on the leads. These are the kinds of flaws that stay hidden until the moment you wire the lamp into your system. If a tube doesn’t pass the hipot test, it goes in the trash. Period. We mainly keep an eye on two things: Insulation Resistance, to make sure the current stays where it belongs (inside the filament) and doesn’t bleed into the chassis. Dielectric Withstand, where we hit it with high voltage to make sure it won’t snap under a power surge.
A quick heads-up on heat
Here’s the thing: high-wattage IR elements get incredibly hot. That kind of thermal stress can eat away at insulation over time. Our elements are built to take a beating, but they can’t do all the heavy lifting. You’ve got to make sure your own glovebox wiring and connectors are rated for those temperatures. If your leads aren’t up to the task, the insulation will melt—no matter how perfectly we tested the lamp.
